Greg Gutfeld Leaves Red Eye

Friday night marked an end of an era.  Greg Gutfeld, the creator of Fox News' Red Eye hosted the show for the last time, officially.  He is leaving to work on a new weekend show that will also air on Fox.  Red Eye will continue on with various hosts rotating in and out until a permanent host is announced.

Red Eye is such an unusual show and is one of my favorites.  Airing in the 2 a.m. time slot, it routinely beats out CNN's primetime line-up in the key demo.  One of the things I like most about it is how genuine it feels.  It features panelists that talk loosely about the hot topics of today whether its political, cultural, or mythological (unicorns are a favorite topic).

The show feels like someone just happened to leave the cameras in the studio on as several friends sat around talking.  Just like I do with my friends, they talk about serious issues but always have a joke on hand to lighten the mood or calm someone down.

Guests include people ranging from presidential candidates, musicians, comedians, and political pundits and while many came from both sides of the aisle, the show never devolved into a shout out free for all like most cable news panels.  It showed that people can disagree on some serious issues but still treat each other with respect and joke about themselves.

Throughout the shows run, the humor has oftentimes been edgy and walked the fine line between funny and obscene and that is what makes the show so special.  It never treated the viewers like idiots and it took for granted that they would laugh at the ridiculous things happening on screen without explanation.

As a fan of the show, I always felt as if I were in on some kind of inside joke that nobody else but Red Eye fans knew.  You get to know the frequent guests on a more personal level than you would on another show.  Watching feels as if you happened to walk into a bar and struck up a candid conversation with a group of people.

I hope the show continues on strongly without Gutfeld's sense of humor leading the way, but as seen throughout the years, there are plenty of long time guests that can be just as crazy and hilarious.

Here are a few videos from the last show:

Thanks for all the laughs and good times though the past 8 years, Greg.  Good luck with your new show!
